Description
Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine derivative that has anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, and anxiolytic properties. It is marketed under different trade names such as Klonopin (in the United States), Ravotril (in Chile), Rivotril, or Rivatril (in most other countries). It is considered a long-acting benzodiazepine.
Clonazepam is used to control certain types of seizures in the treatment of epilepsy and for the treatment of panic disorders. It works by affecting chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause seizures or symptoms of panic disorder.
It is important not to use clonazepam if you have severe liver infection or if you are allergic to clonazepam or other benzodiazepines. It may cause harm to an unborn baby and may affect breathing or feeding problems in a newborn. However, having a seizure during pregnancy could harm both the mother and the baby. Therefore, if you are pregnant, it is important to inform your doctor before starting clonazepam.
Prior to using clonazepam, inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver infection, glaucoma, any breathing problems, or a history of depression, suicidal thoughts, or addiction to drugs or alcohol.
It is advised not to drink alcohol while using clonazepam as it can increase the effects of alcohol. Clonazepam can be habit-forming and should only be used by the person it was prescribed for. It should not be shared with others, especially those with a history of drug abuse or addiction.
