Description
Mogadon, also known as nitrazepam, belongs to the class of medications called benzodiazepines. It is primarily used for short-term treatment of insomnia, including difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings during the night, and early-morning awakening. It can also be used to manage myoclonic seizures. Mogadon works by slowing down the nerves in the brain (the central nervous system).
The recommended adult dose of Mogadon for insomnia is 5 mg to 10 mg taken at bedtime. For seniors, a lower starting dose of 2.5 mg taken at bedtime is recommended. The treatment period should be as short as possible, generally not exceeding 7 to 10 consecutive days, to avoid dependence and withdrawal symptoms.
Mogadon is available in two strengths: 5 mg and 10 mg tablets. It is important to take the medication exactly as prescribed by the doctor, and the dose should not be increased or the treatment duration extended without medical advice.
Common side effects of Mogadon include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, blurred vision, dry mouth, and gastrointestinal issues. It can also cause more severe side effects such as abnormal thinking, memory problems, muscle weakness, and signs of liver function impairment. Withdrawal symptoms and rebound insomnia may occur if the medication is stopped suddenly after prolonged use.
Mogadon should not be taken by individuals who are allergic to nitrazepam or other benzodiazepines, children for the treatment of insomnia, those with myasthenia gravis, severe liver impairment, or sleep apnea.
